“Hats off to hats!”

Pull original hat creations out of your hat and win

20 October – 16 December 2018

A hat is more than a head covering. It is more of an eye-catcher for an outfit, drawing attention as desired. Anyone wearing a hat is usually trying to stand out from the crowd. And that’s exactly the focus of our competition held as part of the special exhibition Hats off to hats! We are looking for the most unusual, adventurous, or extravagant hat creations.

Come throw your hat in the ring
Those interested in participating in the competition will receive the necessary hat free of charge from the Spielzeug Welten Museum Basel starting 20 October 2018. It’s up to participants to decide which means and accessories will be used to produce a unique creation, but the hat must be decorated so that it can hold the weight of the decorations and a person can still wear it normally. If these criteria are not met, we won’t be able to show it in the display window. The last possible submission date for the decorated hat is 16 December 2018.

Hang your hat with us for a while
The hat decorations received will be displayed in our display window from 26 January to 17 February 2019 and evaluated by the public online or with cards that can be obtained from the museum. Since there is only space for 100 hats in the display window, we may hold a prejudging session if more than 100 hats are received. The hat creations of the participants will be displayed in the display window until 24 March 2019. The two hats that achieve the highest point count in their categories from voting will win.

Category A | Children up to 13 years of age

1st prize: City trip to London with a Harry Potter Warner Bros. Studio Tour for two people, incl. flight and overnight stay for one night. Value: CHF 500

2nd prize: Voucher for an unusual children’s birthday cake hat. Value: CHF 300

3rd prize: Voucher for an individual baseball cap to design yourself at create-your-cap.ch. Value: CHF 200

4th–10th prize: Voucher for a bicycle helmet. Value: CHF 100

From 11th prize: Dice game Fang den Hut (Coppit) from Ravensburger

Category B | Youth 14 years and older and adults

1st prize: Fascinator hat from our special exhibition Hats off to hats! Designer: Philip Treacy, London. Value: CHF 500

2nd prize: Top hat, Leopard grazy from our special exhibition Hats off to hats! Designer: Berry Rutjes, Den Haag. Value: CHF 300

3rd prize: Top hat, Lady amherst from our special exhibition Hats off to hats! Designer: Berry Rutjes, Den Haag. Value: CHF 200

4th–10th prize: Voucher for a bicycle helmet. Value: CHF 100

From 11th prize: Voucher for a stylish baseball cap for men or women

No cash will be paid out. The competition prize cannot be exchanged. There will be no correspondence concerning the competition. Legal recourse is barred. All winners will be personally informed. Employees of the Spielzeug Welten Museum Basel and their family members do not qualify to participate. All participants will be personally informed of the competition results by 17 March 2019. Submitted hat creations remain the property of the Spielzeug Welten Museum Basel until voting is concluded. All prizes in the children’s category and all prizes in the adult category, except the three main prizes (hats are part of the special exhibition), can be retrieved from Tuesday 2 April to 18 April 2019,Tuesday through Friday from 10.00 to 17.30, along with the submitted hat creations. The three main prizes in the adult category can be picked up together with the submitted hat creations from Wednesday, 10 April to Friday, 26 April 2019, Tuesday through Friday from 10.00 to 17.30. The museum is closed on Mondays and pickups will not be possible. The following applies for all categories and the specified collection time periods: collection after the specified time is no longer possible and any claim to the prize and the hat creation expires.
